Ramadan, Hajj, school holidays and the weather: what each month brings in Madinah, with the Islamic dates worked out from the Umm al-Qura calendar.

Islamic dates are approximate: each month begins with the sighting of the new moon, which can move a date by a day.

      Many come through Madinah: for Hajj 1446, 719,400 pilgrims, 49% of those arriving by air, landed at Madinah airport. In 1446 and 1447, Umrah permits were paused from 1 Dhul-Qa'dah until 14 Dhul-Hijjah.

      Pilgrims travel on to Madinah and the new Umrah season opens. In 1447, Umrah visas resumed on 14 Dhul-Hijjah, and Pakistan, Indonesia and Iraq sent the most pilgrims in the first weeks.

Dates follow the moon

We work the dates out from the Umm al-Qura calendar, Saudi Arabia's official one. The real start of each month is set by the moon sighting.

Umrah dates change each year

The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah announces each season's dates, and the pause before Hajj. Check Nusuk before you book flights.

Travelling from Pakistan?

Punjab's schools were closed from 22 May to 23 August in 2026. The dates for 2027 are not announced yet.
