How to pray Salat al-Janazah

The funeral prayer is often held in Masjid an-Nabawi right after the obligatory prayers. When you hear “aṣ-ṣalātu ʿalā al-amwāt”, stay standing in your row. There is no rukuʿ or sujud.

  1. 1

    First takbir

Make the intention, raise your hands with “Allāhu Akbar”, then recite Surah al-Fatihah silently.

  2. 2

    Second takbir

Say “Allāhu Akbar” and send blessings on the Prophet ﷺ, the Ibrahimiyyah as in tashahhud.

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā Muḥammadin wa ʿalā āli Muḥammad, kamā ṣallayta ʿalā Ibrāhīma wa ʿalā āli Ibrāhīm, innaka Ḥamīdun Majīd

O Allah, send blessings on Muhammad and his family as You sent blessings on Ibrahim and his family. You are Praiseworthy, Glorious.

  3. 3

    Third takbir

Say “Allāhu Akbar” and make duʿa for the deceased.

    اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لَهُ وَارْحَمْهُ، وَعَافِهِ وَاعْفُ عَنْهُ

Allāhumma ighfir lahu warḥamhu, wa ʿāfihi waʿfu ʿanhu

O Allah, forgive him, have mercy on him, keep him safe and pardon him. (Sahih Muslim)

  4. 4

    Fourth takbir and salam

Say “Allāhu Akbar”, pause briefly (you may make a short duʿa), then end with “as-salāmu ʿalaykum wa raḥmatullāh” to the right.
